The Falcon 144 and 170 Six en-
gines (Figs. I, 2, and 3) have th e
sa me ba sic design with a compre ssion
ratio
of 8.7: 1. The 144 Six engine
has a pis ton displace ment of 144
cubic inches a nd the patent pl ate
identification symbol is "S". The 170
Six. engine has a pis ton displaceme nt
of 170 cu bic inche s and the pate nt
plate identification sy mb ol is "U" ,
Th e engines can be further iden-
tified by the le tt er " N" (144 Six)
a nd the letter "T" (170 Six) st ampe d
on a boss located to the right of the
cr a nkca se vent tube outlet.

incoming fuel mix tur e.
To pre v ent ca rburetor icing at the
throttle plate, an engine coola nt heat-
ed spacer is located between the car-
buretor and the int ake manifold
(Fig. 4). The coo lant flows from the
front of the eng ine through the
spacer inlet hose into the carb uret or
coolant spacer. The coolant circu-
lates through the spacer a nd flows
into the h
eater inlet ho se and into
the heater. On ca rs that do not have
a heater, there is no hose co nnection
to the coolant spacer.

rear E-I-I-E-I-E-E-I-E-I-I-E.
CYLINDER BLOCK
Th e cylinders are numbered from
1-6 s tarting at the fr ont of the engine.
The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4.
T he distributor, l oc ated on the left
fr ont of the engine, drives the oil
pump through an intermediate drive
shaft.
