radios,wheninstallingandoperatingamedicaldeviceorsystem.
Operatingthesystemnearradiofrequency(RF)andelectromagneticinterference(EMI)abovethe
conditionsdenedintheEMCStandardEN60601-1-2forRadiatedImmunity(eldstrengthsabove
3voltspermeter)maycausewaveformdistortions.
MedicalElectricalEquipmentneedsspecialprecautionsregardingEMCandneedstobeinstalled
andputintoserviceaccordingtotheEMCinformationprovidedintheaccompanyingservice
manual.PortableandmobileRFcommunicationsequipmentcanaffectmedicalelectrical
equipment.
Theuseofaccessories,transducers,andcablesotherthanthosespecied,withtheexceptionof
transducersandcablessoldbythemanufacturerofthesystemasreplacementpartsforinternal
components,mayresultinincreasedemissionsordecreasedimmunityofthesystem.
Thesystemshouldnotbeusedadjacenttoorstackedwithotherequipmentand,thatifitis
necessarytousethissystemadjacenttoorstackedwithotherequipment,thesystemshouldbe
observedtoverifynormaloperationinthecongurationinwhichitwillbeused.ReviewtheAAMI
CommitteeTechnicalInformationReport(TIR)18,“GuidanceonElectromagneticCompatibilityof
MedicalDevicesforClinical/BiomedicalEngineers”.Thisguidancedocumentprovidesameans
toevaluateandmanagetheEMIenvironmentinthehospital.
ThefollowingactionscanbetakentoreducetheriskofmedicaldeviceEMIandachieveEMC:
lAssesstheEMCenvironmentofthehealthcarefacility(forexample,identifyradiotransmittersin
andaroundthefacility)andidentifyareaswherecriticalmedicaldevicesareused(forexample,
ER,ICU,CCU,NICU).
lIncreasethedistancebetweensourcesofEMIandsusceptibledevices.
lRemovethedevicesthatarehighlysusceptibletoEMI.
lLowerthepowertransmittedfromelectricalandelectronicequipment(EMIsources)under
hospitalcontrol(forexample,pagingsystems).
