Locationoftheapplianceandchimneywillaffectperformance.
• Installthroughthewarmairspaceenclosedbythebuilding
envelope.This helps to produce more draft, especially
duringlightinganddie-downofthere.
• Penetratethehighestpartoftheroof.Thisminimizesthe
effectsofwindloading.
• Locate termination cap away from trees, adjacent
structures,unevenrooflinesandotherobstructions.
• Minimizetheuseofchimneyoffsets.
• Considertheappliancelocationrelativetooorandceiling
andatticjoists.

Draftisthepressuredifferenceneededtoventappliances
successfully.Whenanapplianceisdraftingsuccessfully,all
combustionbyproductsareexitingthehomethroughthe
chimney.
Considerationsforsuccessfuldraftinclude:
• Preventingnegativepressure
• Locationofapplianceandchimney
Tomeasurethedraftornegativepressureonyourappliance
use a magnahelic or a digital pressure gauge capable of
reading0-1inchesofwatercolumn(W.C.).
The appliance should be running on high for at least 15
minutesforthetest.
Withthestoverunningonhighyoushouldhaveanegative
pressureequaltoorgreaterthanthenumbergiveninthe
chartbelow.Ifyouhavealowerreadingthanyoundonthe
chart,yourappliancedoesnothaveadequatedrafttoburn
thefuelproperly.
Minimum Vacuum Requirements: .35 - .55

draftmetermusthaveaminimumrangeof0-.5”)Recordthe
rstreading.Connectuepipetostoveandbesurealldoors
andwindowsinthehomeareclosed.Recordtheseconddraft
reading_______.If thesecondreadingismore than .05”
lowerthantherstreading,checkforpossiblerestrictions
ortheneedforoutsideair.Formoreinformationonthedraft

CAUTION
Negativepressureresultsfromtheimbalanceofairavailable
fortheappliancetooperateproperly.Itcanbestrongestin
lowerlevelsofthehouse.
Causesinclude:
• Exhaustfans(kitchen,bath,etc.)
• Rangehoods
• Combustionairrequirementsforfurnaces,waterheaters
andothercombustionappliances
• Clothesdryers
• Locationofreturn-airventstofurnaceorairconditioning
• ImbalancesoftheHVACairhandlingsystem
• Upperlevelairleakssuchas:
- Recessedlighting
- Attichatch
- Ductleaks
Tominimizetheeffectsofnegativeairpressure:
• Installtheoutsideairkitwiththeintakefacingprevailing
windsduringtheheatingseason
• Ensureadequateoutdoorairforallcombustionappliances
andexhaustequipment
• Ensurefurnaceandairconditioningreturnventsarenot
locatedintheimmediatevicinityoftheappliance
• Avoidinstallingthe applianceneardoors,walkwaysor
smallisolatedspaces
• Recessedlightingshouldbea“sealedcan”design
• Attichatchesweatherstrippedorsealed
• Atticmountedductworkandairhandlerjointsandseams
tapedorsealed
