H. Avoiding Smoke and Odors
Negative Pressure, Shut-down, and Power Failure:
To reduce the probability of back-drafting or burn-back in
the pellet burning appliance during power failure or shut-
down conditions, the stove must be able to draft naturally
withoutexhaustbloweroperation.Negativepressureinthe
housewillresistthisnaturaldraftifnotaccountedforinthe
pelletapplianceinstallation.
Heatrisesinthehouseandleaksoutatupperlevels.This
airmustbereplacedwithcoldairfromoutdoors,whichows
into lower levels of the house. Vents and chimneys into
basementsandlowerlevelsofthehousecanbecomethe
conduitforairsupply,andreverseundertheseconditions.
Outside Air
Anoutsideairkit is recommended inallinstallations.The
OutsideAirKitmustbeorderedseparately.
Pernationalbuildingcodes,considerationmustbegivento
combustionairsupplytoallcombustionappliances.Failure
tosupplyadequatecombustionairforallappliancedemands
mayleadtobackdraftingofthoseandotherappliances.
Whentheapplianceisroofvented(stronglyrecommended):
Theairintakeisbestlocatedontheexteriorwalloriented
towardstheprevailingwinddirectionduringtheheating
season.
Whentheapplianceisside-wallvented:
Theairintakeisbestlocatedonthesameexteriorwall
astheexhaustventoutletandlocatedloweronthewall
thantheexhaustventoutlet.
Theoutsideairsupplykitcansupplymostofthedemands
ofthepelletappliance,butconsiderationmustbegivento
thetotalhousedemand.
House demand may consume the air needed for the
appliance.Itmaybenecessarytoaddadditionalventilation
tothespaceinwhichthepelletapplianceislocated.
ConsultwithyourlocalHVACprofessionaltodeterminethe
ventilationdemandsforyourhouse.
Vent Congurations:
To reduce probability of reverse drafting during shut-
down conditions, Hearth & Home Technologies strongly
recommends:
• Installingthepelletventwithaminimumverticalrunof
vefeet,preferablyterminatingabovetheroofline.
• Installingtheoutsideairintakeatleastfourfeetbelowthe
venttermination.
Topreventsootdamagetoexteriorwallsofthehouseand
topreventre-entryofsootorashintothehouse:
• Maintainspeciedclearancestowindows,doors,andair
inlets,includingairconditioners.
• Ventsshouldnotbeplacedbelowventilatedsofts.Run
theventabovetheroof.
• Avoidventingintoalcovelocations.
• Ventsshouldnotterminateunder overhangs, decks or
ontocoveredporches.
• Maintain minimum clearance of 12 inches from the
ventterminationtotheexteriorwall.Ifyouseedeposits
developing on the wall, you may need to extend this
distancetoaccommodateyourinstallationconditions.

caused by reverse drafting of pellet appliances under
shut-down or power failure conditions.
Vent Pipe
Besuretouseapprovedpelletventpipewallandceilingpass-throughttingstogothroughcombustiblewallsandceilings.
Besuretouseastartingcollartoattachtheventingsystemtothestove.Thestartingcollarmustbesecuredtotheuestub
withatleastthreescrews,andsealedwithhightempsiliconecaulking.
4"stainlesssteelexventpipingisonlyallowedforuseinmasonryreplacesandchimneysorfactorybuiltwoodburning
replaceswithclassAmetalchimneys.
Pelletventingpipe(alsoknownasTypeLvent)isconstructedoftwolayerswithairspacebetweenthelayers.Thisairspace
actsasaninsulatorandreducestheoutsidesurfacetemperaturetoallowaclearancetocombustiblesofonly1inch.The
sectionsofpipelocktogethertoformanairtightsealinmostcases;however,insomecasesaperfectsealisnotachieved.
ForthisreasonandthefactthattheP-Seriesoperateswithapositiveventpressure,wespecifythatthejointsalsobesealed
withsilicone.
Wherepassingthroughanexteriorwallorroof,besuretousetheappropriatepass-throughdeviceprovidinganadequate
vaporbarrier.Ventingmanufacturersgenerallyprovidethesepass-throughdevices.
