Executive summary
HP ProCurve Networking offers an extensive line of networking products built to provide standards-based
features, high performance, superior quality, and ease of use. Providing network platforms, wired and wireless
connectivity, network security, network management, network applications, and support and services in a
single unified networking solution, HP ProCurve’s Unified Wired and Wireless Infrastructure offers customers
business agility, business continuity, and reduced cost of ownership.
This guide describes the HP ProCurve Switch 8200zl, 5400zl, 3500, and 6200yl series, which are based on
a common platform architecture with common switch software and tools. The foundation for these switches
is a purpose-built ProVision™ ASIC that allows the most demanding networking features, such as quality of
service (QoS) and security, to be implemented in a scalable yet granular fashion. With a high-performance
architecture, 10-GbE capability, and programmable application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), these
switches offer excellent investment protection, flexibility, and scalability. The HP ProCurve Switch 5400zl and
8200zl series also provide a wide range of service modules to enable wireless management, security and
threat management, and HP ProCurve ONE-enabled hosted applications and services.
The HP ProCurve Switch 6600 series shares a common platform architecture with common switch software
and tools and is tailored to address specific platform requirements for data center server access deployments.

The current revision of this guide covers the following HP ProCurve switch products:
HP ProCurve Switch 8206zl (J9475A)
The HP ProCurve Switch 8206zl is a 6U switch (10.5 inch/26.67 cm), designed with high-availability features,
dual redundant management modules, dual resilient fabric modules, and redundant power supplies. The
chassis can hold up to 6 zl interface and service modules and can provide up to either 144 Gigabit ports or
24 10-Gigabit ports. The throughput of the 8206zl switch fabric is capable of up to 240.2 million (64-byte)
packets per second (Mpps), with a backplane speed of 345.6 Gbps.
HP ProCurve Switch 8212zl (J8715B)
The HP ProCurve Switch 8212zl is a 9U switch (15.75 inch/40 cm), designed with high-availability features,
dual redundant management modules, dual resilient fabric modules, and redundant power supplies. The
chassis can hold up to 12 zl interface and service modules and can provide up to either 288 Gigabit ports
or 48 10-Gigabit ports. The throughput of the 8212zl switch fabric is capable of up to 480.3 Mpps with a
backplane speed of 691.2 Gbps.
HP ProCurve Switch 5406zl Intelligent Edge (J8697A)
The HP ProCurve Switch 5406zl is a 4U switch (6.9 inch/17.53 cm) that can hold up to 6 zl interface and
service modules and can provide up to either 144 Gigabit ports or 24 10-Gigabit ports. The throughput of the
5406zl switch fabric is capable of up to 240.2 Mpps with a backplane speed of 345.6 Gbps.
