MAINTENANCE AND LUBRICATION 5
5.14 ENGINE EXHAUST __________________________________________________________
If the exhaust note or color changes, stop the engine immediately. Identify the problem and have the system
repaired.
Torque all exhaust manifold hardware equally. Tighten or replace the exhaust clamps.
5.15 HYDRAULIC HOSES_________________________________________________________
Before you inspect or disconnect any hydraulic line, lower the cutting units to the ground, disengage all the
drives, engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and remove the key
Check visible hoses and tubes as indicated in the Maintenance chart. Look for wet hoses or oil marks. Replace
worn or damaged hydraulic lines before you operate the mower.
The replacement tube or hoses must follow the same path as the original hose. Do not move the clamps,
brackets and cable-ties to a new location.
Completely inspect all tubes, hoses and connections as indicated in the Maintenance chart.
IMPORTANT: If the hydraulic fluid becomes dirty, damage to the hydraulic system can occur. Before you
disconnect any hydraulic line, clean the area around the fittings and the ends of the hoses. Do not allow dirt to
cause contamination of the hydraulic systems.
Before you disconnect any hydraulic line, tag or mark the location of each hose then clean the area around the
fittings.
Protect the ends of all open hydraulic lines and open ports to prevent contamination. Clean any hydraulic fluid
that spills.
Make sure “O” rings are clean and hose fittings are correctly installed before you tighten.
Twisted hoses can cause the hose connections to loosen in operation and can cause oil leaks.
The hydraulic hoses that are twisted or have sharp bends can decrease the oil flow and damage the hoses. The
decreased oil flow can cause system problems and increase the temperature of the hydraulic fluid.
WARNING
The exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide. The Carbon Monoxide in exhaust fumes can increase to
dangerous levels if the exhaust is damaged or you operate in closed spaces. Inspect the complete-
exhaust system every month and replace damaged components immediately.
NEVER operate the engine without enough ventilation.
The temperature of the exhaust components can be more than 300° F (149° C). To prevent the burns,
do not touch a hot exhaust system.
WARNING
To prevent injury, never use the hands to check for oil leaks. Use a piece of paper or cardboard to find
leaks.
The Hydraulic lines, motors, valves and pumps contain the hydraulic fluid at operating pressure. This
pressure is enough to force hydraulic fluid into the skin. If the skin is broken by hydraulic fluid, get
medical attention immediately. A medical professional must immediately remove the hydraulic fluid or
gangrene can occur.
