FM-200® FILL MANUAL
Revision B
Document # DOC180
Issued: August 16, 2010
Revised: April 2, 2012
Section 2 Cylinder Assembly
2 CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
e cylinder assembly consists of the cylinder, dip tube, and cylinder valve.
2.1 Cylinder
e FM-200® agent is stored as a liquid inside a welded steel cylinder. e cylinders are superpressurized
with dry nitrogen to a pressure of 360 psig (24.8 bar) at 70°F (21°C). Every cylinder has a minimum ll
density of 35 lb/ft
3
(561 kg/m
3
) and a maximum ll density of 70 lb/ft
3
(1121 kg/m
3
). e capacity of a
cylinder varies according to the design requirements and the Series designation (See Table 2.1 for a list of
available capacities).
Standard domestic cylinders
are manufactured according
to the requirements of
the U.S. Department of
Transportation (USDOT)
and Transport Canada
1
(TC)
for compressed gas and are
tted with an identication
label indicating the ll
quantity of FM-200®.
Each cylinder has internal
neck threads to allow for
connection to the cylinder
valve.
2.1.1 Rupture Disc
A frangible rupture disc is tted to the Lv Series cylinder body. It functions as an emergency relief device in
the event of excessive internal pressure within the cylinder. Its rupture point is between 850 psi (58.6 bar)
and 1000 psi (68.9 bar).
is feature is not found on the Sv Series or Mv Series cylinder. Instead, a rupture disc is located on the side
of Sv Series and Mv Series cylinder valve as detailed in sections 2.3.1 and 2.3.2.
2.1.2 Liquid Level Indicator
e liquid level indicator consists of a sealed non-magnetic tube containing an external measurement tape
tted with a magnet. A second magnet with an opposing polarity is installed on the outside of the tube and
is exposed to the FM-200® liquid. As the tape is extracted from the tube, it will engage with the second
magnet creating a noticeable change in tension. e measure on the tape when this change in tension
occurs indicates the current liquid level inside the cylinder and can then be compared to a chart located in
Appendix B of this manual to determine the current ll weight of the cylinder.
e liquid level indicator assembly is threaded into an outlet on the head (top) of the Mv Series and Lv
Series cylinders.
is feature is not found on the Sv Series cylinder.
