Virtually all fires involving lithium batteries can becontrolledby floodingwith water, however, the
contents of thebattery willreact withwater andform hydrogengas. In aconfined space,
hydrogen gas canform anexplosive mixture. In this situation, asmotheringagent is
recommended. A smothering agent will extinguishburning lithium batteries.
Any person respondingto suchan emergency shouldwear a self-contained
breathingapparatus.
Burning lithium iron disulphide batteries produces toxic andcorrosive lithium
hydroxide fumesandsulfur dioxide gas.
