10.9 Checking the riding sag of the shock absorber

Measure distance

of rear wheel unloaded. ( p. 32)
With another person holding the motorcycle, the rider, wearing full protective cloth-
ing, sits on the seat in a normal sitting position (feet on footrests) and bounces up
and down a few times.
The rear wheel suspension levels out.
Another person again measures the distance between the rear axle and
marking SAG on the rear fender using the sag gauge.
Note down the value as dimension

The riding sag is the difference between measurements

Check the riding sag.

Adjust the riding sag. ( p. 34)
10.10 Adjusting the spring preload of the shock absorber
Caution
Risk of injuryParts of the shock absorber will fly off if the shock absorber is disassembled incorrectly.
The shock absorber is filled with highly compressed nitrogen.
Please follow the description provided. (Your authorized KTM workshop will be glad to help.)

Before changing the spring preload, make a note of the present setting, e.g., by measuring the length of the spring.
Preparatory work
Raise the motorcycle with a lift stand. ( p. 38)
Remove the shock absorber. ( p. 45)
After removing the shock absorber, clean it thoroughly.

Main work
Loosen screw

Turn adjusting ring

until the spring is no longer under tension.
Hook wrench (T106S)
Measure the overall spring length while the spring is not under tension.
Tighten the spring by turning adjusting ring

to measurement

Guideline
Spring preload (SXF EU) 9 mm (0.35 in)
Spring preload (SXF US) 6 mm (0.24 in)
Spring preload (XCF US) 7 mm (0.28 in)

Depending on the static sag and/or the riding sag, it may be necessary to
increase or decrease the spring preload.
Tighten screw

Guideline
Screw, shock absorber adjusting ring M5 5 Nm (3.7 lbf ft)
Finishing work
Install the shock absorber. ( p. 46)
