canseriouslydamageservercomponentsandparts.
Anyserverpartcontainingtransistorsorintegratedcircuits(ICs)shouldbeconsideredsensitiveto
electrostaticdischarge(ESD).ESDdamagecanoccurwhenthereisadifferenceinchargebetweenobjects.
ProtectagainstESDdamagebyequalizingthechargesothatthemachine,thepart,theworkmat,andthe
personhandlingthepartareallatthesamecharge.

Whenyouhandleserverpartsandcomponents,taketheseprecautionstoavoidstatic-electricitydamage:
•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparoundyou.
•Alwayscarefullyhandlethepartsandothercomponents(suchasPCIExpresscards,memorymodules,
systemboards,andmicroprocessors)byedgesorframe.Donottouchsolderjoints,pins,orexposed
circuitry.
•Donotleavethedevicewhereotherscanhandleandpossiblydamagethedevice.
•Beforeyoureplaceanewpart,touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthenewparttoan
unpaintedmetalpartoftheserverforatleasttwoseconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityfromthe
packageandyourbody.
•Removethenewpartfromthestatic-protectivepackageanddirectlyinstallitintheserverwithout
placingitonanyothersurface.Ifitishardforyoutodothisinyourspecicsituation,placethe
static-protectivepackageofthenewpartonasmooth,levelsurface,andthenplacethenewparton
thestatic-protectivepackage.
•Donotplacethepartontheservercoverorothermetalsurface.
•Takeadditionalcarewhenhandlingdevicesduringcoldweather.Heatingreducesindoorhumidity
andincreasesstaticelectricity.
•Useagroundedworkmattoprovideastatic-freeworksurface.Thematisespeciallyusefulwhen
handlingESD-sensitivedevices.
•Preventthepartfromtouchingyourclothing.Mostclothingisinsulativeandretainsachargeevenwhen
youarewearingawriststrap.
•Theuseofagroundingsystemisrecommended.Forexample,itisrecommendedtowearanelectrostatic
discharge(ESD)wriststrap,ifoneisavailable.EnsurethatyouworkinanESD-safearea.Selecta
groundingsystem,suchasthoselistedbelow,toprovideprotectionthatmeetsthespecicservice
requirement.
