My Recommendation: While this function could be useful
if one uses the Information display frequently, I suspect that
many D300(S) users do not depend on the Information
display as often as those who own lower-cost Nikons. The
lower-end cameras are more and more Information display
centered since many of their users came over from the
point-and-shoot world and expect that easy, shortcut style of
camera configuration.
Only recently has Nikon added more functionality to the
Information display on the D300(S)-level cameras, which sets
a pattern that will only grow in future cameras. How long will
it be before we have touch-screen technology?
In any case, I still mostly use the Backlight switch setting to
turn on the backlight for the Control panel only. I would
rather simply press the Info button when I want access to the
Information display on the rear monitor.
