Water Immersion Operation (Water Immersion Type
Objective Handling)
An objective with a "W" mark is a water immersion type objective. It is designed to focus on a specimen at
a working distance in water. To use this type of objective, apply water (normal saline solution or such) into
a chamber. And lower the objective to make its tip touch the water.
When you wish to observe a specimen to a depth of 0.2 mm or so on from the surface, for example a
sliced brain, you are recommended to perform an observation under infrared rays or to use a water
immersion type objective with a correction ring, Plan 100xW.
CAUTION:
Leaking water from the chamber can give rise to corrosion of the stage or the condenser lens.
If water in the chamber spills on the stage or on the condenser lens, it should be wiped out
soon.
After use, wipe off water from the tip of the objective, then follow up by wiping with absolute alcohol.
If you observe water stains, apply a small amount of neutral detergent and wipe gently, then follow up with
absolute alcohol.

Cleaning the Oil Immersion Type Objective After Use
To wipe off immersion oil, use petroleum benzine. For optimum results, we recommend following up
petroleum benzine with absolute alcohol (ethyl or methyl alcohol).
If petroleum benzine is unavailable, use methyl alcohol. However, methyl alcohol does not clean as
well as petroleum benzine, it will be necessary to wipe the surface repeatedly. (Usually, three- or
four-times wipe is sufficient to clean the lenses.)
WARNING
When using petroleum benzine or absolute alcohol, always follow the instructions
provided by the manufacturer. These liquids are highly flammable and must be kept
away from flames and sparks.
