.4Touchscreenlocationrequirements

ouchscreenperformancecanbeaffectedbytheinstallationenvironment,
specificallyT ouchscreendisplaysinstalledabovedecks,whereitwillbe
opentotheelementsmayexhibitthefollowing:
•HotT ouchscreentemperature—Ifthedisplayismountedwhereitwill
beexposedtoprolongedperiodsofdirectsunlight,thetouchscreen
maybecomehot.
•ErroneousTouchscreenperformance—Exposuretoprolongedrainand
/orwaterwashovermaycausethedisplaytorespondto‘falsetouches’,
causedbytherain/waterhittingthescreen.
If,duetotherequiredinstallationlocation,exposuretotheseelementsis
anticipatedthenitisrecommendedthatyouconsider:
•InstallingaremotekeypadsuchastheRMK-10andoperatingthedisplay
remotely—Touch-onlydisplays.
•LockingtheT ouchscreenandusingthephysicalbuttonsinstead—
HybridTouchdisplays.
•Attachingathird-party‘displayhoodaccessory’toreducedirectsunlight
exposureandthevolumeofwaterthatthedisplayisexposedto.
7 .5Wirelesslocationrequirementsforoptimum
performance
Allwirelessdevicesinyoursystemmustbelocatedinsuchawaythatthey
canreliablyreceiveand/ortransmitwirelesssignals.
Anumberoffactorscaninfluencewirelessperformance.Forexample,
physicalobstaclesandcertainvesselstructuresandmaterialscanall
negativelyimpactwirelessperformance.Therefore,it’simportanttochecka
product’swirelessperformanceatthedesiredinstallationlocationbefore
drillinganymountingholes.
Vesselconstructionandmaterials
Whereverpossible,mountproductsonsurfacesconstructedfromGRP(e.g.
fiberglassresin,orfoam),orondrywoodenbulkheads.
Conductivematerialsinthesignalpathcanhaveasignificantimpacton
wirelesssignalperformance.Reflectivesurfacessuchasmetalsurfaces,
sometypesofglassandevenmirrorscandrasticallyaffectperformance
orevenblockthewirelesssignal.Installationlocationsthatareinclose
proximitytothesematerialsshouldbeavoided.DoNOTmountwireless
productsdirectlytoconductivematerials.Thisincludesanymounting
surfaceorenclosure/pod.
Examplesofconductivematerialsinclude,butarenotlimitedto:
•carbonfibre,kevlar,oraramid(includingsailsmadefromthesematerials)
•aluminium
•steel
Ininstallationswithconductivematerials,ifavailable,mountthewireless
productusinganaccessorypolemountordeckmountingkit.Aclearance
ofatleast10cm(3.9in)isrequiredtominimizethegroundeffectfrom
conductivematerials.Thisappliestotransmittersaswellasdisplays.If
movingtheproductfixestheproblem,considercuttinganantennaclearance
holebehindtheunit(oncetheproductpositionandmountinghavebeen
finalized).
Wirelessperformancecanalsobedegradedinlocationswherethewireless
signalpassesthroughabulkheadcontainingpowercables.
Crewmembers(especiallywhenwet)canalsobeobstructivetowireless
signals,iftheirbodiespassthroughthesignalareabetweenwirelesssensor
andanyassociateddisplays.
Checkingandoptimizingsignalstrength
Itmaybenecessarytoexperimentwiththelocationofyourwirelessproducts
toachieveoptimalwirelessperformanceandaclearsignalpath.
Thedistancebetweenwirelessproductsshouldalwaysbekepttoa
minimum.Donotexceedthemaximumstatedrangeofyourwirelessproduct
(maximumrangewillvaryforeachdevice).
Wirelessperformancedegradesoverdistance,soproductsfartherawaywill
receivelessnetworkbandwidth.Productsinstalledclosetotheirmaximum
wirelessrangemayexperienceslowconnectionspeeds,signaldropouts,
ornotbeingabletoconnectatall.
Forbestresults,thewirelessproductshouldhaveaclear,directline-of-sight
totheproductitwillbeconnectedto.Anyphysicalobstructionscandegrade
orevenblockthewirelesssignal.
