Propeller Shaft Brake
In certain operational circumstances, the propeller
may cause the propeller shaft to rotate when the
engine is stopped. This passive rotation is
uncomfortable and can be harmful to the reversing
gear as its oil pump, which is driven by the input shaft,
will not operate when the engine is stopped.
The propeller shaft may be allowed to rotate with a
stopped engine for up to 6–8 hours. After this, the
engine must be started and run for at least five minutes
for lubrication and cooling of the reversing gear.
In cases where the propeller shaft may rotate faster
than in normal operations, e.g. boat under sail, a
temperature gauge should be installed for monitoring
the oil temperature.
Max. permissible temperature for ZF reversing gears is
95°C (203°F).
When the above-mentioned regulations cannot be
met, or when the shaft needs to be stopped for reasons
of comfort, a shaft brake must be fitted. On isolated
occasions, the propeller shaft flange may be locked in
a suitable manner instead.
Power Take-off
Engines can be disconnected as a propulsion unit for
use as a power take-off.
The function can only be activated from an active
station. It is possible to change engine speed and
disconnect the function from an inactive helm station.
Engaging the power take-off
1 Move the control levers to neutral.
2 Press PTO to disconnect the midships engine from
propulsion. The engine is now locked in neutral at
idle revolutions and cannot be affected by the
control levers.
3 Use + and – to increase or reduce midship engine
speed. The engine should always be running at idle
revolutions when activating power take-off.
Engine speed can be adjusted both before and after
activation of power take-off.
4 Activate power take-off by pressing RPM.
The engine will assume the set speed.
Disengaging the power take-off
1 Press RPM to disconnect power take-off control.
The engine will revert to idle speed.
2 Move the control levers to neutral.
3 Press PTO to connect the engine for propulsion.
The engine is now in neutral and idling.
