ENGINE MAINTENANCE
Checking the Engine Oil
Onlyusehighqualitydetergentoil ratedwithAPIserviceclassification
SF,SG,SH,or SJ, Selectthe oil's SAEviscositygradeaccordingto
theexpectedoperatingtemperature.Followthe chartbelow.
Althoughmulti-viscosityoils(5W20,10W30,etc.)improvestarting
in coldweather,theywill resultinincreasedoil consumptionwhen
usedabove32°RCheckyourengineoillevelmorefrequentlytoavoid
possibleenginedamagefromrunninglowonoil.

Tochecktheengineoil, proceedas follows:
1. Ensurethatthetractoris ona levelsurface.
2. Cleantheoil fill areaofanydebris.
3. Removethedipstickandwipe withacleancloth.
4. Insertandtightendipstick.
5. Removethedipstickandcheckthe oil level.It shouldbeat the
Fullmarkonthedipstick.SeeFigure9.

Theengineoil shouldbechangedinthe first 5 hoursand thenevery
50 hoursoroncea season.Tochangetheengineoil, proceedas
follows:
1. WithengineOFFbutstillwarm,disconnectsparkplugwireand
keepitawayfromsparkplug.
2. Removethe oilfill cap/dipstickfromtheoil fill tube.SeeFigure9.
3. Clipthe oildrainsleeve(packedwiththis manual)ontothe oil
drainport. Routetheoppositeendofthe sleeveintoanappropri-
ateoilcollectioncontainerwitha capacitygreatenoughtocollect
theusedoil.
4. Removedrainpluganddrainoil intoa suitablecontainerwitha
capacityof nolessthan64 oz.
5. Performsteps2 through4 intheoppositeorderafteroil has
finisheddraining.
6. Refillthe enginewithnewmotoroil untiltheoil levelonthe
dipstickreadsFULL.Replacetheoil fill cap/dipstick.
Usedoil isa hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly.
Donotdiscardwithhouseholdwaste.Checkwithyourlocalauthori-
ties oror contact1-800-4-MY-HOMEfor alist ofsafedisposal/
recyclingfacilities.
7. Reconnectsparkplugwire.

6. If low,addoil slowlyintothe engineoilfill. Donotoverfill.After
addingoil,waitoneminuteand thenrecheckthe oil level.
Donotoverfill.Overfillingwithoil maycausetheenginetonot start,
hardstarting,orenginesmoking.If overthe FULLmarkonthe
dipstick,drainoil toreduceoil levelto FULLmarkondipstick.
7. Replaceandtightendipstick.
