Air filter
MTD vertical shaft engines are equipped with one of
two different air filters. The first is a rectangular paper
pleated filter that may or may not have a foam pre-cleaner.
The second is an oval foam filter. See Figure 3.1.
NOTE: There are four different air filter housings styles
used on 61, 65 and 70 series engines:
• Paper filer with a thumb screw door.
• Paper filter with a snap fit door.
• Oval foam filter housing.
• Round foam filter housing.

To access the air filter:
1. Remove the thumb screw that holds the air filter
cover closed.
2. Swing open the filter cover. See Figure 3.2.
3. Remove the air filter and the pre-cleaner.
4. Install the filters by following the above steps in
reverse order.
