MPLSServiceConguration
MultiprotocolLabelSwitching(MPLS)isoriginallydevelopedtoincreaseforwardspeedof
routers.HavingprominentadvantagesintheapplicationsoftrafcengineeringandVPN,
theMPLSprotocolplaysanimportantroleinIPnetworks.
ThekeypointoftheMPLSprotocolistheconceptoflabels,whichareshort,
easy-to-handle,andwithouttopologyinformation.Labelscontaininformationthatonly
affectsinacertainarea.
Initially,MPLSfocusonIPv4.However,thekeytechniquesofMPLScanbeexpandedto
multipleprotocols,suchasIPv6,IPX,Apple-talk,andSNA.MPLShasnolimitationonthe
linklayertechniquesandcantransportnetworkgroupsoveranymediabetweennetwork
entities.
MPLSpacketsareforwardedbasedonlabels.WhenIPpacketsenteranMPLSnetwork,
thePEroutersontheMPLSingressanalyzethecontentsofthepacketsandselectthe
properlabelsforthepackets.ThepacketsareforwardedbynodesintheMPLSnetwork
accordingtotheseshortlabels.WhenthepacketsleavetheMPLSnetwork,thePErouters
ontheMPLSegressremovethelabels.
