Problem Probable Cause Action
Engine hard to start or
will not start.
1. Improper starting procedure.
2. No fuel.
3. Air in fuel line.
4. Crankcase oil too heavy.
5. Improper type of fuel.
6. Water, dirt or air in fuel system.
7. Clogged fuel filter.
1. Review starting procedure in Engine
Operator’s Manual.
2. Check fuel gauge.
3. Bleed the fuel line.
4. Use oil with proper viscosity.
5. User proper fuel for operating conditions.
6. Drain, flush, fill and bleed system.
7. Replace the filter element.
Engine runs irregularly
or stalls frequently.
1. Low coolant temperature.
2. Clogged fuel filter.
3. Water dirt or air in fuel system.
4. Dirty or faulty fuel injection nozzles.
5. Clogged air filter.
1. Remove and check thermostat.
2. Replace filter element.
3. Drain, flush, fill and bleed.
4. Have authorized dealer or distributor check
the nozzles.
5. Replace the filter elements.
Below normal engine
temperature.
1. Defective thermostat.
2. Defective temperature gauge.
1. Remove and check thermostat.
2. Check gauge, sender and all connections.
Lack of power. 1. Engine overload.
2. Intake air restriction.
3. Clogged fuel filters.
4. Overheated engine.
5. Below normal engine temperature.
6. Faulty engine.
1. Reduce the load.
2. Service air cleaner.
3. Replace fuel filters.
4. Refer to Engine Operator’s Manual. Check
for plugged radiator/oil cooler fins.
5. Remove and check thermostat.
6. Refer to Engine Operator’s Manual.
Low oil pressure. 1. Low oil level.
2. Faulty gauge or sender.
3. Improper type of oil.
1. Add oil.
2. Check
gauge, sender and connections.
3. Drain and fill crankcase with
proper viscosity
and quality.
Engine overheats 1. Engine overloaded.
2. Low coolant level.
3. Plugged radiator/oil cooler fins.
4. Faulty radiator cap.
5. Cooling system needs flushing.
6. Defective thermostat.
7. Defective temperature gauge or
sender.
1. Reduce the load.
2. Fill radiator to proper level, check radiator
and hose for loose connections or leaks.
3. Clean fins.
4. Replace radiator cap.
5. Flush cooling system.
6. Replace thermostat.
7. Check and replace.
