Place a new head
gasket
over
dowels
on
the cylinder
block.
NOTICE:
Trouble will
arise
if the wrong cylinder
head
gasket
is installed.
HINT:

Confirm
that the
new
gasket
is
appropriate
for the
engine
you
are
repairing by checking the
number of
cutouts.

one thickness of
gasket
exists
for
both
these
engines,
gasket
with no mark

Gaskets
with no cutout are used only
in factory assembly

available as a supply

When replacing the
gasket
only,
use a
new
gasket
with the same thickness
identification
number as
shown on the originally
installed
gasket.
However,
when replacing
piston,
crankshaft
or con-
necting rod,
select
the appropriate cylinder
head
gasket
according to
the
piston
protrusion. (See page
EM-96)

Position
the cylinder
head over dowels on the block.

TOROUE

HINT:

The
cylinder head
bolts are tighten
in
three
progressive
steps.
o'
lf
any of the bolts break
or
deform, replace
them.
o
lf
the
cylinder
head
bolts
are to be
replaced,
use only
cylinder
head bolts
with a 12-sided
head.

Apply
a
light
coat of engine
oil on
the
threads
and
under the cylinder head bolts.
(b)
First,
uniformly
torque the eighteen cylinder
head
bolts in
several
passes
and in the
sequence shown.
Torque:
5OO kg-cm

lf
any one
of the bolts does
not
meet the torque
specifica-
tion,
replace
the
bolt.
