1 The control lever must be in the neutral position N
to start the engine.
2 To go forward: move the control lever forward from
neutral N to the forward gear engagement detent
position F. Throttle movement T begins after
forward gear engagement. Move the control lever
forward to increase speed.
3 To go in reverse: move the control lever back from
neutral to reverse gear engagement detent position
R. Throttle movement T begins after reverse gear
engagement. Move the control lever back to
increase speed. Avoid high speed in reverse gear.
4 To go from forward to reverse, or reverse to
forward, always pause at neutral N and allow
engine speed to return to idle.
NOTICE! Shifting directly between forward and
reverse may damage the drive or the engine (water
ingestion). The damage could be severe.
NOTICE! Do not shift gears if engine speed is above
800 RPM. High RPM shifting may damage the drive.
Throttle Only
The gear shift can be disengaged so that the control
lever only operates the engine throttle.
To disengage the shift mechanism, move the control
lever to the neutral position, press the gear shift
release button, then move the control lever to the
throttle range of the control mechanism.
This feature will disengage when the control lever is
moved back to neutral.
If your boat is equipped with a control that is not from
Volvo Penta, ask your dealer for operating instructions
for your control. Operation and function may differ from
the Volvo Penta controls shown here.
