STARTING
WARNING
This vehicle is extremely fast and
powerful, and must be used with the
greatest care. Do not ride this vehicle if
you are not an experienced, trained
motorcycle rider. This vehicle is
capable of extremely high speeds and
extremely high performance and must
be used with due respect for these
capabilities.
Do not place anything inside the front
part of the fairing between the
handlebar and the dashboard. Any
object placed in this area could jam the
forks, and also could restrict visibility of
the dashboard.
NOTE Before starting the engine,
carefully read the “safe drive” chapter, see
page 19 (SAFE DRIVE).
WARNING
Exhaust gases contain carbon
monoxide, which is extremely
poisonous if inhaled.
Avoid starting the engine in closed or
badly-ventilated rooms.
Failure to observe this warning may
cause loss of consciousness or even
lead to death by asphyxia.
NOTE When the side stand is extended
the engine will not start unless the
transmission is in neutral. Note also that if
you attempt to shift into gear with extended
side stand, the engine will stop.
With the side stand retracted, the engine
may be started with the gear selector in
neutral without pulling in the clutch lever.
The engine may be started while the
transmission is in gear only if the clutch
lever is pulled in.

WARNING
Be careful not to drop the vehicle when
you first sit on it.
u Sit astride the vehicle, see page 65
(GETTING ON AND OFF THE
VEHICLE).
WARNING
Ensure that the side stand is correctly
stowed.
u Sit astride the vehicle, see page 65
(GETTING ON AND OFF THE
VEHICLE).
u Make sure the stand is fully up.
u Make sure the dimmer switch (1) is in the
"" position.
u Set the engine kill switch (2) to "".
u Turn the key (3) to set the ignition switch
to "".
When you turn the key:
– All digits of the multifunction display
come on for 3 seconds.
– All dashboard warning lights (4) and the
backlighting come on for 3 seconds.
– The odometer pointer (5) points to the
last red line threshold setting for 3
seconds and then returns to idle rpm.
CAUTION
During normal operation, all instruments
will give the current reading.
If the fuel low warning light " " (6)
positioned on the dashboard comes on,
refuel as soon as possible, see page 48
(FUEL).
