2. If you have the optional printer, turn it on. Certain diagnostic
information will be printed as the test proceeds.
3. If possible, return to the MAIN menu by pressing .1 MAIN I.
4. To start the self-test, hold down the 1 ON 1 key while you press the
fifth menu key from the left*. Once the self-test has begun, do
not press any keys until you are ready to halt the test. The
HP-18C displays a series of patterns. You should watch for one
of two messages. They are displayed briefly, before the test auto-
matically repeats .
• If the calculator passes the self-test, the HP-18C displays 01(-
18C-E.
• If the HP -18C displays a number followed by F A I L, the cal-
culator
may require service.
5. To halt the self-test, hold down the 1 ON 1 key while you press the
third menu key from the left. The HP -18C displays
MAC HI N ERE SET. If you press any other key instead, the test
halts
and the HP-18C displays a FA I L message. This message
results from an incorrect key being pressed, and does not mean that
the calculator requires service.
6. lf the HP-18C failed the self-test, you should repeat steps 4 and
5 to verify the results.
If the Calculator Requires Service
Hewlett-Packard maintains service centers in most major countries
throughout the world. You may have your calculator serviced at a
Hewlett-Packard service center any time it malfunctions, whether the
unit is under warranty or not. There is a charge for service after the
one-year warranty period. Calculators normally are serviced and re-
shipped within five (5) working days of receipt at any service center.
This is
an average time and could possibly vary depending upon the
time of year and work load at the service center. The total time you
are
without your calculator will depend largely on the shipping time.
* Pressing the fourth menu key from the left starts another self-test that is used at the factory.
If you accidently start this self-test, you can stop it by holding down the @ill key while you
press
the third menu key from the left.
