Configuration considerations
Connectors and configuration interfaces
Fibre channel connector
The Fibre Channel connector is a Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP), dual-port, multimode (short wave
850 nm) optical transceiver which consists of an industry standard duplex LC-type connector. The
attenuation experienced by fiber cables varies by cable type, number of connectors used, and so on. The
Fibre Channel standard FC-PI-5 (see www.t11.org) provides additional detail on operating ranges of the
various cable types. Typical operating ranges specified in FC-PI-5 and its predecessors are shown in
Table following. Use of 62.5/125 µm (OM1) is not recommended. The SFP optical transceiver is designed
to fit into a dual port cage/connector system embedded on the rear section of the tape drive's main logic
card. Use of the SFP cage system must be limited to repair/replacement/upgrade of transceiver. The SFP
cage system is not intended for constant insert/removal of the SFP transceiver itself.

Setting the Loop ID and Arbitrated Loop Physical Address (AL_PA) (Fibre
Channel Drive only)
Each device on a Fibre Channel loop must have an Arbitrated Loop Physical Address (AL_PA) to
communicate. The AL_PA identifies the device on the loop and is determined either by the Loop identifier
(hard addressing) or is software assigned during loop initialization. The half-height drive is hard-wired to
ensure that the addressing mode and the Loop ID are configured over the automation interface (see
ADC-4). The default configuration for Ultrium 8 FC Tape Drives is AL_PA hard addressing.
NOTE:
A Loop ID is part of a contiguous range of values; valid AL_PA values are not in a contiguous range. The
relationship between Loop ID and AL_PA is defined in FC-AL-2.
Power connections
Power is supplied to the Tape Drive through the power connector. The pins of the power connector are
shown in Table 16. The power connector pins are numbered with respect to the keying notches on the
power connector.
Power connection to the drive is made to connector as shown in the following table.
