Chapter 7. Magnetic Slot Reader Information
The magnetic slot reader (MSR) and
the
magnetic
hand scanner
(MHS)
are devices used
to
read data
encoded
on
different types of magnetic striped
documents, such as adhesive
labels
on
card stock,
tags, and
plastic cards.
An
audio beeper and three
light indicators present feedback information
to
the
operator.
The
MSR
components are packaged
in
a plastic
housing which has a slot
that
serves
as
the~document
path. The
MHS
is
a hand-held device whose com-
ponents are also packaged
in
a plastic housing. The
repair and maintenance of both devices
is
a customer
responsibility.
Neither device may read magnetic stripes accurately
if
the stripes contain any of
the
following defects:
tears, scratches, contaminants, demagnetized areas,
wrinkles (surface irregularities), and voids.
Head
element cleaning
is
performed
by
the
customer
as
required_ The recommended method of cleaning
is
to
wipe
the
element with a cloth
wetted
with
isopropyl alcohol. Refer
the
customer
to
the

Scanner
