Checks/Steering Wheel Replacement

PRELIMINARY CHECKS
Checking Operation
1. Check transmission fluid level (see Section 3, MAIN-
TENANCE).
2. Add fluid if needed.
3. Start engine.
4. Turn wheel lock to lock several times.
5. Check for smooth movement of wheel.
NOTE: If wheel movement is erratic, proceed to power
steering tests.
6. Shut off engine.
7. Check for leaks. Make sure transmission filter is tight.
NOTE: If leaks are found, they must be repaired immedi-
ately to prevent damage to power steering system.
8. Check hydro pump output (see Section 10, U-TYPE
HYDROSTATIC UNIT SERVICE).
Testing Steering Cylinder
1. Start engine and turn wheels to full left position.
2. Stop engine.
3. Disconnect front hose from fitting on cylinder.
4. Connect suitable hose to fitting.
5. Place container below hose.
REMOVE AND REPLACE
Steering Wheel Replacement
1. Park the tractor on a level surface.
2. Turn the ignition key switch to the OFF position,
remove the key, set the parking brake, and turn the
PTO switch off.
3. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable
(see Section 7, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SERVICE).
4. Remove steering wheel cap (A, Figure 6), nut (B),
and lockwasher (C).
5. Pull steering wheel from shaft. (A special tool puller
may be required. Do not use the standard steering
wheel puller as that will damage the tractors steering
wheel.)
6. Remove steering wheel boot.
7. Reassemble steering wheel in reverse order and coat
shaft with anti-seize compound.
NOTE: Do not pound on steering wheel with hammer as
this will damage the steering wheel and tilt assembly.

6. Start engine and hold steering wheel against right
stop. After initial flow of oil, flow should stop. Do the
same for the left stop.
7. If flow continues, replace cylinder.
