Correct
and
incorrect
thread
tension
To
easily
understand
the
importance
of
correct
thread
tension,
try
different
thread
tensions
by
sewing
on
a
scrap
of
fabric.
Begin
by
using
an
excessively
loose
ten
sion,
i.e.
set
the
tension
dial
near
“0”.
Look
at
the
fabric
and
you
will
find
that
the
lower
thread
lies
straight
and
the
upper
thread
is
drawn
underneath
the
fabric.
If,
however,
you
set
the
dial
at
the
highest
number,
the
opposite
will
occur,
or
the
seam
may
pucker.
The
thread
tension
is
correct
when
the
threads
inter
lock
in
the
middle
of
both
layers
of
fabric.
Please
note
that
even
the
best
quality
thread
may
vary
in
thickness.
When
sewing
in
fine
fabrics,
the
knot
may
sometimes
be
visible.
If
you
should
find
it
difficult
to
adjust
the
thread
ten
sion
to
the
degree
that
you
require,
this
may
be
due
to
an
unfortunate
combination
of
needle,
thread
and
fabric.
Coarse
thread
requires
a
coarse
needle,
otherwise
there
will
be
too
much
resistance
when
the
thread
must
pass
through
the
eye
of
the
needle.
Experiment
with
a
slightly
longer
stitch
length
or
try
reducing
the
presser
foot
pressure
one
or
two
grades.
This
will
make
it
easier
for
the
machine
to
pull
up
the
thread.
Always
check
that
the
thread
tension
is
correct
by
first
sewing
on
a
double
thick
scrap
of
the
same
fabric
you
intend
to
work
with.
Increase
the
upper
thread
tension
if
you
are
going
to
topstitch
with
coarse
thread
on
thick
fabric.
If
you
should
still
not
be
satisfied
with
the
result,
try
letting
the
thread
run
outside
the
thread
guide
at
the
needle
clamp.
It
may
be
necessary
to
further
increase
the
thread
tension
when
sewing
very
difficult
materials,
e.g.
thick
and
rough-surfaced
leather.
