Joining
and
overcasting
If
you
are
not
going
to
press
the
seams
open
then
it
is
possible
and
timesaving
to
join
and
overcast
simultane
ously.
Seams
sewn
in
this
way
will
be
fine
and
supple.
Press
the
push-button
for
“Joining
and
overcasting’’.
The
machine
is
now
set
at
the
correct
stitch.
Overcast
stitch
(1)
is
usually
used
for
sewing
light
and
medium
non-stretch
materials.

leavier
non-stretch
fabrics
are
best
sewn
with
the
double
overlock
stitch
(2).
The
overcast
stitch
(3)
is
also
preferable
for
sewing
light
stretch
fabrics
while
the
overlock
stitch
(4)
is
used
for
other
stretch
materials.
The
sewing
adviser
selects
automatically
the
right
kind
of
overlock
and
overcast
stitch
to
suit
your
fabric.
When
sewing
stretch
fabrics
these
stitches
are
sewn
with
a
space
between
the
side
stitches
which
makes
the
seam
elastic.
For
other
fabrics
they
are
sewn
without
spaces.

The
stitch
length
and
width
will
be
automatically
selected
to
suit
your
fabric.
Join
and
overcast
direct
where
the
edge
is
cut
with
a
5
mm
seam
allowance.
Using
the
basic
setting,
allow
the
fabric
edge
to
run
along
the
right,
inside
edge
of
the
presser
foot.
Presser
foot
J
is
fitted
with
a
pin
to
prevent
the
fabric
edge
from
puckering.
Topstitching
Fopstitclung
is
used
for
sewing
down
seam
allowances
and
as
a
decorative
stitch
on
facings.

pocket
flaps,

Press
the
push-button
for
“Topstitching’’.
The
thread
tension
is
automatically
adjusted.
Straight
stitching
(1)
is
the
most
commonly
used
stitch
but
when
sewing
fine
stretch
fabrics,
where
the
edge
tends
to
curl,
the
stretch
stitch
(2)
is
usually
a
better
choice.
For
other
stretch
fabrics,
use
reinforced
straight
stitch
(3)
which
is
more
effective.
Topstitching
should
always
he
sewn
on
double
fabric.
Some
fabrics
require
interfacing
to
attain
the
full
effect
of
topstitchmg.
