17.5 Checking the gear oil level

The gear oil level must be checked when the engine is cold.
Preparatory work
Stand the motorcycle upright on a horizontal surface.

Main work
Remove gear oil level monitoring screw

Check the gear oil level.
A small quantity of gear oil must run out of the drilled hole.
» If no gear oil runs out:
Add the gear oil. ( p. 119)
Mount and tighten the gear oil level monitoring screw.
Guideline
Screw, gear oil level

M6 10 Nm (7.4 lbf ft)
17.6 Changing the gear oil
Warning
Danger of scaldingEngine and gear oil get very hot when the motorcycle is ridden.
Wear suitable protective clothing and safety gloves.
In the event of scalding, rinse the area affected immediately with lukewarm water.
Note
Environmental hazardHazardous substances cause environmental damage.
Dispose of oils, grease, filters, fuel, cleaning agents, brake fluid, etc., correctly and in compliance with
the applicable regulations.

Drain the gear oil while the engine is at operating temperature.
Preparatory work
Park the motorcycle on a level surface.
Place an appropriate container under the engine.

Main work
Remove gear oil drain plug

with magnet.
Let the gear oil drain fully.
Thoroughly clean the gear oil drain plug with magnet.
Clean the sealing surface on the engine.
Mount and tighten gear oil drain plug

with the magnet and
a new seal ring.
Guideline
Gear oil drain plug
with magnet
M12x1.5 20 Nm (14.8 lbf ft)
