SHIFT LEVER / CABLE
SHIFT LEVER REMOVAL
1. Remove the shift knob cover

, retaining screw
w
and shift knob
e
from the shift lever
r
.
2. Remove the fasteners retaining the center console
(see Body / Frame chapter). Remove the console
from the vehicle.
3. Remove the clip and washer retaining the shift cable
to the shift lever and disconnect the cable end from
the lever.
4. Remove the retaining ring
t
and slide the shift lever
y
off the mounting bracket and out from the frame.
5. Remove both bushings
u
from the shift lever and
service as needed.
SHIFT LEVER INSTALLATION
Perform the removal steps in reverse order to install the
gear shift lever (lever, cable, console, shift knob).
SHIFT CABLE INSPECTION
Shift cable adjustment may be necessary if symptoms
include:
No gear position or AWD display on instrument cluster
Ratcheting noise on deceleration
Inability to engage into a gear
Excessive gear lash (noise)
Gear selector moving out of desired range
Inspect shift cable, clevis pins, and pivot bushings and
replace if worn or damaged.
SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT
1. Locate the shift cable attached to the transmission
case in the right rear wheel well area.
2. Inspect shift cable

dust boot

. Replace if worn or damaged.
