13 . SET NO. 1 CYLINDER AT TDC/ COMPRESSION
(al Tum the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with
the pointer on the oil pump.
(bl Check that the line mark of the camshaft timing
pulley af,gns with the top end of the cylinder head
If necessary, tum the crankshaft pulley one complete
revolution.
14. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING PULLEY
(al Place matchmarks on the camshaft timing pulley,
. injection pump pulley and timing belt
(bl Using a screwdriver, remove the tension spring.
CAUTION: Do not pinch the tension spring with
pliers or such.
Id Loosen the No. 1 idler pulley bolt
(d) Using SST, to hold the camshaft timing pulley,
remove the pulley bolt with the plate washer.

CAUTION: Avoid turning-the camshaft because the
va lv es will hit against the piston.
(el Remove lhe camshaft timing pulley with the timing
belt
(f} Support the belt so the meshing of the injection
pump timing pulley and timing belt does not shift
CAUTION:
• Be careful not to drop anything inside the timing belt
cover.
• Do not allow the belt to come into contact with oil,
water or dust .

15 . REMOVE NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER
16 . REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER
Remove the six nuts and seal washers and. lift off the
head cover with the gasket
17 . REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD
(a) Remove the engine front hanger.
lb) Gradually loosen and remove the eighteen head bolts
in three passes and in the numerical order shown.
CAUTION: Head warpage or cracking could result
from removing in incorrect order.
(c) Lift the cylinder head from the dowels on the cylinder
block and place the head on wooden blocks on a
bench.
NOTE: If the cylinder head is difficult to lift off, pry with
a screwdriver between the cylinde r head and block projec-
tion.
CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the cylinder
head and block surface on the head gasket sides.
