Assembling Clutch
PREPARATION
AND
INSPECTION
Clutch Springs.
Check carefully for distortion. The free length of the spring
is
:
4
plate clutch, 1.5" (3.81 cms.);
5
plate clutch, 1.969" (5.0 cms.). If a spring measures
less than 1.4" and 1.869" (3.56 and 4.75 cms.) respectively, a new one should be
employed,
or
better
still
a
complete set.
Cork Plates. Wash in paraffin and examine the cork inserts for wear and general
condition. The corks should protrude
fr"
(0.8 mm.) on each side of the plate and
show no signs of burning. The engagement projections on the plate should be
unworn and a good
fit
in the clutch housing.
Steel Plates. These must be perfectly flat and neither surface scored.
Clutch Hub. Inspect the bearing surface for pitting and indentation and replace if
either fault is evident.
Clutch Roller. Check diameter with a micrometer 0.2495" (6.337 mm.), 0.25"
(6.350 mrn.), and if below the former,
fit
a
new set. Also carefully inspect for signs
of rust.
Clutch Sprocket.
First inspect the condition of the sprocket teeth. If these are
"hooked" or "chipped" a new sprocket must be fitted to avoid excessive chain wear.
or, in extreme cases, chain failure. If the teeth are in good condition, inspect the
bearing spool for pitting or indentation. Failure at this point can be rectified by
pressing out the old spool and replacing
it
with a new one which must be ground
after fitting. Lastly, check the housing slots in which the clutch plates operate.
If worn the clutch will be nolsy in operation an6 in extreme cases the plates may
not free properly when the clutch
is
disengaged.
ASSEMBLING THE CLUTCH
It
is
assumed that the primary chaincase has been fitted and the 5lutch housing
assembly has been dismantled, but the shock absorber unit has been dealt with as
on page
87.
Clutch
Housing
and
Hub. Apply grease to the centre hub bearing track and
assemble the twenty rollers to the hub.
Fit the hub into the clutch sprocket.
Place the assembly on the bench with the open end of the housing facing upwards.
Shock Absorber Assembly. Position the four clutch pins into the shock absorber
unit and press the latter onto the hub splines. Before finally pressing into position,
ensure that the heads of the pins
are
correctly located against the flange on the shock
absorber inner plate.
Primary Chain. Place the engine sprocket and clutch sprocket on the bench in
their relative positions and assemble the chain
to
them with the spring link fastener
facing upwards and its security checked. Fit the key to the gearbox mainshaft and
assemble the engine and clutch sprocket as,one unit to their respective shafts.
