Outboard Rigging Guide - 2001
SPEEDOMETER
The speedometer provides the operator with an
approximation of the speed being traveled. This is
useful for planning the length of a trip and adding
to the general enjoyment of boating.
Yamaha speedometers use the stock pitot tube on
the 30hp and larger motors. The optional
speedometer sending unit should be used with the
25hp motor.
The speedometers are available in 3-3/8 inch
sizes to match the size of the tachometer. There
are two calibrations available, either 0~50 or
0~75 mph calibrations.
The multi-function speedometer (standard with
all V4/V6's) uses LCD readouts for speed, time,
distance, fuel level, and has warning features for
low fuel and low battery voltage. The speed can
be calibrated for mph, kph, and knots.
Additional Parts Required
When installing and using boat speedometers, it
is important to remember that they indicate an
approximate speed of the boat through the water
by measuring the impact force of the water with a
pressure gauge. This impact force will vary with
the density of the water and the speed of the
impact. The density can vary by the purity of the
water (salt, fresh, algae) and the temperature of
the water. The speed of water impact can vary by
the location of the speedometer pickup and its
relation to the water flow off the area of the boat
in front of the pickup. Because of these variables,
the true speed of a boat can vary from the indi-
cated speed on the meter.
NOTE: In high-performance applications where
the engine has been mounted in an elevated posi-
tion, it may be necessary to use an optional speed
sender to obtain a correct reading.
