7.20 Assembling the cylinder and piston

Lubricate the gudgeon pin’s needle bearing with a
few drops of engine oil. Place a distance washer
on each side of the needle bearing. Turn the
countersunk end toward the needle bearing.
Direct the arrow on the top of the piston towards
the exhaust port. See figure 64.
Press in the gudgeon pin and fit the circlips.

Check that the pulse channel (A) in the cylinder is
open. See figure 65.

Place a new cylinder base gasket on the cylinder
or the crankcase. Orient the hole in the gasket
toward the intake.
Lubricate the piston and the crank bearing with a
few drops of engine oil.
Assemble the cylinder with the help of the piston
ring compressor in the assembly set no. 502 50 70-
01.

NOTE!
Do not twist the cylinder when sliding it
down over the piston. There is a risk that
the piston ring may break.
NOTE!
Place a rag in the crankcase opening to
prevent the circlip from falling into the
crankcase in case it should fly out.
Check that the circlip is correctly fitted
into the groove by turning it with a flat
nosed pliers.

Tighten the cylinder against the crankcase. Tighten
the screws crosswise and diagonally.

Check the carburettor’s distance piece/heat shield
(A) for cracks.
Make sure the impulse channel (B) is open, that
the gasket (C) is not damaged, and that the
cylinder intake and the heat shield flange are free
from grease, oil and adhesive films. See figure 66.

Screw the distance piece to the cylinder and
tighten the screws crosswise and diagonally.
