9.16Cleaning the dust boots of the fork legs
– Jack up the motorcycle. ( p. 20)

– Push dust boots of both fork legs downwards.
Info
The dust boots remove dust and coarse dirt particles from the fork tubes.
Over time, dirt can penetrate behind the dust boots. If this dirt is not
removed, the oil seals behind the boots can start to leak.
Warning
Danger of accidents Reduced braking efficiency due to oil or grease on the
brake discs.
– Always keep the brake discs free of oil and grease, and clean them with
brake cleaner when necessary.
– Clean and oil the dust boots and inner fork tube of both fork legs.
Universal oil spray ( p. 71)
– Press the dust boots back into their normal position.
– Remove excess oil.
– Remove the motorcycle from the work stand. ( p. 20)
9.17Checking play of steering head bearing
Warning
Danger of accidents Unstable vehicle handling from incorrect steering head bearing play.
– Adjust the steering head bearing play without delay. (Your authorized KTM workshop will be pleased to help.)
Info
If the bike is driven for a longer time with play in the steering head bearing, the bearing and the bearing seats in the frame can
be damaged after time.
– Jack up the motorcycle. ( p. 20)

– Move the handlebar to the straight-ahead position. Move the fork legs to and fro in
the direction of travel.
No play should be noticeable in the steering head bearing.
» If there is noticeable play present:
–
Adjust play of the steering head bearing. x ( p. 25)
– Move the handlebar to and fro over the entire steering range.
The handlebar must move smoothly over the entire steering range. There should
be no perceptible detent positions.
» If detent positions are noticeable:
–
Adjust play of the steering head bearing. x ( p. 25)
– Check the steering head bearing and replace if required.
– Remove the motorcycle from the work stand. ( p. 20)
9.18Adjusting play of steering head bearing x
– Jack up the motorcycle. ( p. 20)

– Loosen screw .
– Loosen and retighten screw .
Guideline
Nut, steering stem M20x1.5 10 Nm (7.4 lbf ft)
– Using a plastic hammer, tap lightly on the upper triple clamp to avoid strains.
– Fully tighten screw .
