3.9 Engine
Always check and, if necessary,
repair the following parts before
looking for faults on the engine:
- Air filter
- Fuel system
- Carburetor
- Ignition system
Condition Cause Remedy
Engine does not start easily, stalls
at idle speed, but operates normally
at full throttle
Secondary air seepage through
leaking gaskets or hairlne cracks in
spacer flange
Inspect spacer flange for cracks,
replace if necessary; install new
gaskets
Insuffcient compression pressure
– Incorrect valve clearance
– Incorrect valve timing
– Valves not running freely
(sticking) in valve guides and are
not closing properly
– Signs of burning in valve seats
– Piston rings worn
– Check that pushrods are correctly
seated; replace bent pushrods
– Check cam followers and replace if
necessary
– Check valve clearance and
readjust if necessary; adjust cam
wheel properly if necessary
– Clean valve stems and guides;
replace valves and/or cylinder if
necessary
– Inspect valve seats; replace valves
and/or cylinder if necessary
– Inspect the piston rings and
replace if necessary
Decompression lever sticking Install new cam wheel
Cylinder leaking or damaged
(cracks)
Check the cylinder and replace if
necessary
