Maintenance: Seawater system
Heat exchanger. Cleaning
WARNING! Close the sea cock and drain off
the water in the sea and freshwater system be-
fore working on the cooling system.
Clean if there are signs of clogging, a gradual in-
crease in engine temperature and high seawater
pressure. Check/clean the seawater filter first. Check
also the seawater pump impeller.
It is often sufficient to clean the heat exchanger insert
tubes once the end cover has been removed. It is
then not necessary to drain the freshwater system.
Proceed as follows when dismantling and cleaning
the insert:
1. Detach the pipe connections from the heat ex-
changer.
2. Remove both end covers (1) from the heat ex-
changer.
3. Clean the heat exchanger insert pipe using suit-
able brushes while flushing through the pipe with
water.
4. Refit both end covers.
5. Connect the pipe connections to the heat ex-
changer. Check gaskets and change if necessary.
6. Open the sea cock. Fill the freshwater system.
7. Start the engine and make sure the seawater sys-
tem is not leaking.
