Troubleshooting
A number of symptoms and possible causes for engine disturbances are described in the table below. If faults or
hitches arise that you cannot solve alone, you must always get in touch with your Volvo Penta dealer.
WARNING! Read the safety directions for maintenance and service in the chapter “Safety information” be-
fore starting work.
Symptom and possible cause
Engine will not stop 1, 2, 3, 5, 33, 41–43
Starter motor will not crank 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 27–30
Starter motor rotates slowly 1, 2
Engine will not start 6–9, 32, 32
Engine starts then stops again 7–9, 13
Engine difficult to start 7–9, 13
Engine does not attain correct operating speed at wide open throttle 7–13, 18, 36–40
Engine knocking 14
Engine runs unevenly 7–9, 13, 14, 33
Engine vibrates 18, 19
High fuel consumption 10, 11, 13, 15
Black smoke 7, 13, 15, 18
Blue or white smoke 14, 15, 26
Lubricant pressure too low 16, 17
Coolant temperature too high 20–26, 35
Weak or no charging 2, 27
1. Batteries discharged
2. Bad contact/break, electric leads
(loose connections, oxidation)
3. Reverse gear not disengaged (applies
to controls with neutral switch)
4. Main switch off
5. One of the semi-automatic fuses in the
terminal box has triggered.
6. Lack of fuel
– fuel cocks closed
– fuel tank empty/incorrect fuel tank
connected
– clogged fuel filter (due to fouling/
paraffin precipitation in the fuel at
low temperatures)
7. Faulty starting switch
8. Air in fuel system
9. Water/comtaminant in fuel
10. Boat loaded abnormally
11. Fouled bottom
12. Accelerator control adjusted wrongly
13. Insufficient air supply to engine
– blocked air filter
– air leak between turbo and engine
inlet pipe
– faulty turbocharger
– bad engine room ventilation
14. Coolant temperature too high
15. Coolant temperature too low
16. Lubricant level too low
17. Clogged oil filter
18. Defective/incorrect propeller
19. Fault in engine suspension
20. Too little coolant
21. Coolant level in engine too low (air in
system)
22. Clogged seawater intake/filter
23. Faulty circulation pump, circulation
pump drive belts slipping
24. Faulty seawater pump (impeller)
25. Faulty thermostat
26. Lubricant level too high
27. Generator drive belts slipping
28. Faulty starter relay
29. Faulty starter motor/solenoid (actuator
solenoid)
30. Water penetration in engine
31. Stop control connected incorrectly/
sticking
32. Solenoid valve (fuel cut-off valve)
incorrectly connected
33. Break in delivery pipe
34. Sea cock closed
35. Clogged heat exchanger insert
36. Clogged charge air cooler
37. High back pressure in exhaust system
38. Faulty injectors
39. Incorrect adjustment of injector pump
40. Faulty smoke limiter
– smoke limiter sticking
– pressure line between intake pipe
and smoke limiter leaking
– faulty diaphragm in smoke limiter
– incorrect setting
41. Faulty stop relay
42. Stop control incorrectly adjusted/stick-
ing
43. Faulty solenoid valve (fuel cut-off
valve)
