Electrical system
The engines are equipped with a bi-polar electrical system with alternating current generator. System voltage is
24V.
WARNING! Before starting work on the electrical system, the engine must be stopped and the powered
turned off with the main switch/switches. Shore power to the engine heater, battery charger or other extra
equipment fitted to the engine must be disconnected.
Classified electrical system
Classifiable propulsion engines have a comprehensive electrical system for monitoring the engine. These engines
are not covered completely in this section. Refer to Volvo Penta publication “Installation Electrical System
TMD102A, TAMD102A, TMD122A, TAMD122A (Classifiable propulsion engines)“.
Main switch
The main switch must never be turned off until the en-
gine has been stopped. Breaking the circuit between
the generator and the battery while the engine is run-
ning can damage the generator. For the same rea-
son, the charge circuits must never be switched while
the engine is running.
IMPORTANT! Never turn the power off using
the main switch while the engine is running.
Electrical connections
Make sure electrical connections are tightened, dry
and free from oxide. If necessary, spray these con-
nections with water-repellant (Volvo Penta all-round
oil).
Fuses
Two semi-automatic 8A fuses are located in the main
electric terminal box. Fuses cut the current when
there is an overload and are reset by pressing the
buttons on the side of the main electrical terminal
box. Determine the cause of the overload before re-
setting the fuses.
