By tightening the gland nuts to the torque indicated in
Table 9-4 or Table 9-5,
the top of the packing flange and packing follower will be at almost the same level, as
illustrated in
Figure 9-6 below (the level may not be exactly the same due to the
dimensional tolerance of the Belleville springs and friction on the gland stud bolts or
gland nuts).
If the Belleville springs are mounted in the wrong direction, or if the gland nuts are
tightened to a torque that does not comply with the torque specified in
Table 9-4
or Table 9-5, the level of the top of the packing flange and packing follower will not be
the same (
Figure 9-7). Check if the direction of the Belleville springs and the tight-
ening torque are correct.

ing follower is even (
