Chapter 12
Switch Management
See the following sections to configure and use these topics:
â– 12-1: Logging: Covers the steps needed to configure a variety of methods to log mes-
sages from a switch
â– 12-2: Simple Network Management Protocol: Presents information on how to con-
figure a switch to use network management protocols
â– 12-3: Switched Port Analyzer: Explains how to mirror switch traffic for network
analysis, either locally or from a remote switch
â– 12-4: Power Management: Covers the commands for managing power to the chassis
and modules
â– 12-5: Environmental Monitoring: Covers the commands for displaying switch tem-
perature information
â– 12-6: Packet Tracing: Discusses several methods for tracing both Layer 2 and Layer
3 packets through a network. From a switch, you can test connectivity to a remote
host
12-1: Logging
â– Logging is used by the switch to send system messages to a logging facility.
â– Logging messages can be sent to any of four different facilities: the switch console, a
file on the switch, Telnet sessions, or a syslog server.
â– Logging history can be maintained in a file to ensure that a record of the messages
sent to Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) or syslog servers are kept
in case a packet is lost or dropped.
