ScanSnap S500 Operator's Guide i
Introduction
Thank you for purchasing Color Image Scanner ScanSnap S500.
ScanSnap S500 is a color image scanner that comes with some useful application programs. It is
designed to help you improve productivity and solve office scanning problems. The features of the
ScanSnap product are as follows:
Just pressing the scanner button allows you to turn images on paper into PDFs!
You can turn documents cluttering up your desk into PDFs, and manage and archive
them on your computer. You can view those PDF documents by using the Adobe®
Acrobat® software, which is packaged with this scanner.
The ScanSnap can automatically recognize the type of documents, color or black-and-
white, so that the size of the scanned image file can be reduced when documents con-
taining a mixture of color and black-and-white pages are scanned. In addition to the
advantage, the scanner can automatically remove blank pages from the document to
further reduce the size of the file.
Effortless scanning!
Double-sided color documents of A4 or Letter size paper can be scanned at a speed of
about 18 sheets/minute (when Scan mode is set to Normal, Color mode is set to Auto,
and Compression rate is set to 3). (*1)
Small desktop footprint!
Smaller than a sheet of A4 or letter size paper, the ScanSnap can be left on your desk
all the time, without being bulky.
Business cards easily filed!
With the "CardMinder
" software, which is supplied with the scanner, business cards
can be easily filed and searched for using the OCR function.
(*1) -Depending on the document, scanning speed may become slower in "B&W"
(Black&White) mode (due to process for converting data scanned in color to mono-
chrome data).
Example: Scanning color brochures in "B&W" mode
-When either of "Automatic size and skew detection" or "Automatic image rotation" is
enabled, scanning speed may become slower.
(*) ScanSnap S500 does not conform to TWAIN and ISIS standards.
This manual describes the handling and basic operations of ScanSnap S500. Before you start using
