Notesonnoise or unusualhandling charac‐
teristics
While driving, pay attention to vibrations, noises
and unusual handling characteristics, e.g.pulling
to one side. This mayindicatethat thewheels or
tires aredamaged. If yoususpect that atireis
defective, reduce your speedimmediately. Stop
thevehicle as soon as possible to checkthe
wheels and tires fordamage.Hidden tiredam‐

Notesonregularly inspecting wheels and
tires
&
WARNING Risk of accident from dam‐
aged tires
Damagedtires can cause tirepressureloss.
As aresult, youcould lose controlofyour
vehicle.
#
Checkthe tires regularly forsigns of
damage and replace anydamaged tires
immediately.
&
WARNING Risk of aquaplaning dueto
insufficient tiretread
Insufficienttiretread will result in reduced
tiregrip. The tiretread is no longer able to
dissipatewater.
This meansthat in heavy rain or slush the
risk of hydroplaning is increased, in particu‐
lar if vehicle speed is notadaptedtosuit the
conditions.
If thetirepressureistoo high or toolow,
tires mayexhibit different levels of wear at
different locations on thetirecontact sur‐
face.
#
Thus, youshould regularly checkthe
tread depth and thecondition of thetire
contact surface across theentirewidth
of all tires.
Minimum tread depth for:
R
Summer tires: â in (3 mm)
R
M+S tires: ã in (4 mm)
#
Forsafetyreasons, replace thetires
beforethe legally prescribed limit for
theminimum tread depth is reached.
Carry out thefollowing checks on all wheels reg‐
ularly,atleastonce amonthorasrequired, e.g.
prior to alongjourney or drivingoff-road:
R
Checkthe tirepressure(/page448).
R
Visually inspect wheels and tires fordamage.
R
Checkthe valvecaps.
The valves mustbeprotected againstmois‐
tureand dirtbythe valvecaps approved
especiallyfor your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz.
R
Visual checkofthe tiretread depth and the
tirecontact surface across theentirewidth.
The minimum tread depth forsummer tires is
â in (3 mm) and forwinter tires ã in
(4 mm).
