VHFantennarequirements
ImportantrequirementsrelatedtothetypeandspecificationoftheVHFantennaforyourAISunit.
T oensureoptimumantennaperformance,adheretothefollowingguidelines:
•TheuseofawidebandVHFantennaishighlyrecommended,ratherthananAIS-onlyantenna.
•TheAIS700requiresawidebandantennatoprovidegoodperformanceforboththeAIS
transceiverandaconnectedVHFradioutilisingtheAIS700'sintegratedantennasplitter.
•UsingaVHFantennaoptimizedforonlyAISfrequencyoperationmaypermanentlydamagethe
AIS700,asVHFradiotransmissionsarereflectedbackintotheAIS700duetothepoorimpedance
matchoftheVHFantennaoperatingatVHFradiofrequencies.
•Usinganon-widebandVHFantennaoptimizedonlyforVHFradiofrequenciesmaycause
transmissionsfromtheAIStransceivertobereflectedbackintotheAIS700,duetothepoor
impedancematchoftheantennaandAIStransceiverfrequencies.Althoughthiswillnotdamage
theAIS700(becauseAISclassBtransmissionsareofsubstantiallylowerpowerthanVHF
transmissions),itcouldresultintheAIS700triggeringasystemVSWRalarm.
•NewVHFantennasaresoldwithafixedcablelength.Thecablelengthpartlydeterminesthe
antennaperformance,andthereforecuttingthecableofanantennacanaffectitsperformance
andresultinahighVSWRratioandlimitedreception.
