General
PortServer II includes a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent. This
agent implements the standard Management Information Base II (MIB-II) as defined
in RFC 1213. In addition, the agent also supports character-based MIB (RFC 1316)
and RS232-like MIB (RFC1317). The SNMP agent provides information, for example
on error rates, to the SNMP host.
The SNMP agent supports the

messages as defined in
RFC 1157. These messages are used as follows:
A list of specific variables that PortServer II supports for each MIB is given at the end
of this chapter.
Get
The SNMP host uses this message to retrieve the value of a specific
object from one of the MIBs supported by PortServer II.
GetNext
The SNMP host uses this message to retrieve the value of the object
following a specific object in the MIB list. This allows a management
station to traverse or “walk” the MIB variables.
Set
The SNMP host uses this message to modifies the value of a MIB object.
PortServer II does not allow sets.
Trap
PortServer II uses this message to asynchronously report a significant
event to the SNMP host.
