EMERGENCIES
Emergency towing
Proper lifting or towing equipment is necessary when lifting or towing the vehicle to
prevent damage. State and local laws must be followed. In an emergency, the vehicle
may be towed on all four wheels for short distances only in the following manner:
1.
Fit the towing equipment to the front towing eye located under the front bumper on
the passengers side. Do not attach towing equipment to the bumpers or brackets,
suspension or cross members.
2.
Turn the ignition key to the ON position. This frees the steering lock and allows the
correct operation of windscreen wipers and turn signals.
3.
Place the transmission in N (neutral) and release the park brake.

further on in this chapter, if the vehicle’s battery is at and needs towing.
4.
For safety and to prevent damage to the vehicle, avoid jerky movements and drive
slowly during towing operations.
5.
Remember that power assist for brakes and power steering are not available
when the engine is switched off. The brakes and steering still function, but require
greater effort.
6.
To prevent exhaust fumes from the towing vehicle entering the towed vehicle,
close the windows and move heating and ventilation controls to the ‘recirculate’
position.
7.
Vehicles tted with automatic transmissions must not be towed for more then 55 km
or at speeds over 55 km/h.
8.
Vehicles with damaged transmissions must not be towed.
9. Only the driver should be inside a towed vehicle.
Front towing eye
The front towing eye is provided under
the front bumper. A driver must be in the
vehicle to steer it and operate the brakes.
Towing in this manner may be done
only on hard-surfaced roads for a short
distance and at low speeds. Also, the
wheels, axles, drive train, steering and
brakes must be in good condition.
WARNING
Do not use the front or rear tie-down
hooks for towing.
