Chapter 6
EMERGENCIES
If your vehicle does not start due to a discharged battery, it can often be started by
using energy from another battery, a procedure called jump starting.
Please read the following procedure before attempting to jump start your vehicle.
However, if after reading the following procedure you are still unsure about jump
starting we strongly recommend for your safety and to avoid damage to your vehicle
that you seek the assistance of a suitably trained service technician.
Jump starting
WARNING
Batteries produce explosive gases, contain corrosive acids and supply levels of
electrical current high enough to cause burns. Therefore, adhere to the following
when working near a battery:
Do not use open ames or sparks near the battery.
Do not smoke near the battery.
Wear eye protection such as safety glasses and avoid leaning over
the battery.
Battery acid is corrosive. If it gets on your skin, wash with plenty of water
immediately. If it gets in your eyes you should not only ush with lots of water
but should also seek medical help. Battery acid also damages paint and
fabrics. To minimise damage, wash off immediately.
Be sure any batteries that have ller caps are properly lled with uid.
Remove rings, metal watch bands and other metal jewellery before working
around the battery.
Never use a quick charger to start the engine.
If you have a telephone tted to the vehicle, you should remove the fuse for
the telephone before jump starting. Remember to replace the fuse afterwards.
To prevent damage to the audio system, switch it off before jump starting
the vehicle.
FLAT BATTERY
WARNING
Do not push start or tow start your vehicle. If unburnt fuel were to reach the
catalytic converter and ignite, the converter could overheat or be destroyed by
backre. Therefore, if the battery is at, you can jump start, but not push start
your vehicle.
To protect your vehicle’s electrical system never disconnect the battery when
the engine is running. Never charge the battery while it is still connected
to the vehicle, rst disconnect the negative cable, then the positive cable.
The polarity of the battery, i.e. the connections for the positive and negative
cables, must not be interchanged when reconnecting. First connect the
positive cable, then the negative cable.
