Alternator
Thetractor's85
Aalternatorisbelt-drivenfromtheengine
crankshaftpulley.Itisimportantthatbeltslippagedoesnot
occur,orthechargingsystemwillbeaffected.Toadjustthe
belt,see7-36.
Otherthanbeltadjustment,theonlyalternatormainte-
nancerequiredistoperiodicallyinspecttheterminalsto
ensuretheyarecleanandtight.Thealternatorcoolingfan
shouldalsobecleanedperiodically.
Whenworkingonorcheckingthealternator,adheretofol-
lowingprecautionsoralternatordamagemayoccur:
•
DonotUNDERANYCIRCUMSTANCESshortthe
eldterminalofthealternatortoground.
•
Donotdisconnectthealternatoroutputleadorbat-
terycableswhilethealternatorisoperating.
•
Donotremovethealternatorfromthetractorwith-
outrstdisconnectingthenegative(-)batterycable.
Whenremovingthebattery,disconnectthenegative
(-)cablerst.
•
Toinstallabattery,MAKESUREthatthepositive
(+)cableisconnectedrstandthatthenegativeter-
minalisconnectedtoground.Reversepolaritywill
destroytherectierdiodesinthealternator.
Ifthebatterychargewarninglightilluminates,indicating
thatthealternatorisnotchargingthebattery,checkthe
fanbeltandthewiringconnections.Iftheseitemsarein
satisfactoryconditionandthewarninglightcontinuesto
indicatenocharge,consultyourNewHollandDealer.
