eflectivesurfacessuchasmetalsurfaces,
sometypesofglassandevenmirrorscandrasticallyaffectperformance
orevenblockthewirelesssignal.Installationlocationsthatareinclose
proximitytothesematerialsshouldbeavoided.DoNOTmountwireless
productsdirectlytoconductivematerials.Thisincludesanymounting
surfaceorenclosure/pod.
Examplesofconductivematerialsinclude,butarenotlimitedto:
•carbonfibre,kevlar,oraramid(includingsailsmadefromthesematerials)
•aluminium
•steel
Ininstallationswithconductivematerials,ifavailable,mountthewireless
productusinganaccessorypolemountordeckmountingkit.Aclearance
ofatleast10cm(3.9in)isrequiredtominimizethegroundeffectfrom
conductivematerials.Thisappliestotransmittersaswellasdisplays.If
movingtheproductfixestheproblem,considercuttinganantennaclearance
holebehindtheunit(oncetheproductpositionandmountinghavebeen
finalized).
Wirelessperformancecanalsobedegradedinlocationswherethewireless
signalpassesthroughabulkheadcontainingpowercables.
Crewmembers(especiallywhenwet)canalsobeobstructivetowireless
signals,iftheirbodiespassthroughthesignalareabetweenwirelesssensor
andanyassociateddisplays.
Checkingandoptimizingsignalstrength
Itmaybenecessarytoexperimentwiththelocationofyourwirelessproducts
toachieveoptimalwirelessperformanceandaclearsignalpath.
Thedistancebetweenwirelessproductsshouldalwaysbekepttoa
minimum.Donotexceedthemaximumstatedrangeofyourwirelessproduct
(maximumrangewillvaryforeachdevice).
Wirelessperformancedegradesoverdistance,soproductsfartherawaywill
receivelessnetworkbandwidth.Productsinstalledclosetotheirmaximum
wirelessrangemayexperienceslowconnectionspeeds,signaldropouts,
ornotbeingabletoconnectatall.
Forbestresults,thewirelessproductshouldhaveaclear,directline-of-sight
totheproductitwillbeconnectedto.Anyphysicalobstructionscandegrade
orevenblockthewirelesssignal.
Somewirelessproductsfeatureasignalstrengthindicatortoassistinthe
processofdeterminingthelocationwiththebestwirelessperformance.
Choosethelocationwiththehighestandmostconsistentlystrongdirect
signalreading,duringa5minutemonitoringperiod.Tryalternativelocations
forthetransmittertomaximisethesignalstrengthtothedisplays;e.g.try
locationsbelowahatchorskylightorneartoawindow.Asmallchangein
productpositioncanresultinasignificantchangeinthesignalstrength.

Somewirelessproducts(e
.g.aHullTransmitter)willnottransmitdata
unlessatransducerisconnected.AlsoconsiderthatanNMEAor
SeaTalkngproduct(e.g.aninterface)willnottransmitdataunlessan
appropriatedatasourceisconnected.
Interferenceandotherequipment
Interferencefromotherpeople’swirelessdevicescancauseinterference
withyourproducts.Youcanuseathird-partywirelessanalyzertool/
smartphoneapptoassessthebestwirelesschanneltouse(e.g.achannel
notinuseoroneusedbytheleastnumberofdevices).
Wirelessproductsshouldbeinstalledatleast1m(3ft)awayfrom:
•Otherwireless-enabledproducts
•Transmittingproductsthatsendwirelesssignalsinthesamefrequency
range
•Otherelectrical,electronicorelectromagneticequipmentthatmay
generateinterference.
Softwareupdates
It'salsoimportanttoensureallyourwirelessproductsarerunningthe
latestsoftwareversions,asimprovementsaremadeovertimetowireless
performance.
6.7Viewingangleconsiderations
Asdisplaycontrastandcolorareaffectedbytheviewingangle,Itis
recommendedthatyoutemporarilypowerupthedisplay,priortoinstallation,
toenableyoutobestjudgewhichlocationprovidestheoptimumviewing
angle.
