2.2 Removing and installing timing chain

Special tools and workshop equipment required
Hand drill with plastic brush
Safety glasses
Sealant - D 176 501 A1-
Removing:
Removing gearbox ⇒ Rep. gr. 34 ; Removing and installing
gearbox .
Remove flywheel ⇒ page 36 .
Remove sump ⇒ page 125 .
Remove bolts -1 and 2- for cover.
Caution
Avoid damage to cylinder head gasket. If the cylinder head
gasket is bent excessively, it can be kinked. A kinked cylinder
head gasket must be renewed.
Pull off cover from cylinder block horizontally.
Press crankshaft oil seal out of lower timing chain cover.
Installing:
Specified torques ⇒ page 78 .
Caution
The lubrication system can be soiled by sealant residue. Care‐
fully cover open parts of engine so that no sealant residue can
fall into it.
Remove remaining sealant on the timing chain cover and cyl‐
inder head using rotating plastic brush etc. Wear safety gog‐
gles.
Clean sealing surfaces; they must be free of oil and grease.
