CHECKING THE BRAKE PADS FOR
WEAR
Read page 35 (BRAKE FLUID -
recommendations), page 36 (DISK
BRAKES) and page 61 (MAINTENANCE)
carefully.
NOTE The following instructions apply
to both braking systems.
NOTE Halve maintenance intervals if
the vehicle is used in rainy or dusty
conditions, on rough roads or for racing.
Check the brake pads for wear after the
first 1000 km (625 miles) and every 2000
km (1250 miles) afterwards and before
each ride.
The rate at which brake pads will wear
depends on usage, riding style and road
surface condition.
WARNING
Inspect the brake pads before each ride.
This is a quick inspection procedure to
determine brake pads wear:
◆ Place the vehicle on the stand, see page
60 (PLACING THE VEHICLE ON THE
STAND).
NOTE The front (right and left) brake
callipers are fitted with four brake pads
each. The rear brake calliper has two
brake pads.
◆ Visually inspect the area between brake
disk and brake pads as follows:
√ front brake callipers (1): check the pads
looking from above at the rear end;
√ rear brake calliper (2): check the pads
looking from the bottom up at the rear
end.
WARNING
If brake pads were allowed to wear
down until uncovering the metal
substrate, metal-to-metal contact with
the brake disk would lead to rattle and
the brake calliper sparking. This will
result in loss of braking and brake disk
damage, causing a dangerous riding
condition.
Have the brake pads changed when the
lining material [of even just one of the front
(3) or rear (4) brake pads] is worn down to
nearly 1.5 mm, or when any one of the
wear indicators is no longer visible:
√ change all brake pads of both front
brake callipers (right and left);
√ change both brake pads of the rear
brake callipers.
WARNING
Have the pads replaced at an aprilia
Official dealer.
